Amateur Radio Licence Training

Marsham ARS can offer training in all the three levels of the Amateur Radio Licence, Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced.

The Foundation course should last about 10-12 hours and could be accommodated over a weekend. Some practical work is required which will give you a flavour of operating VHF and HF radios. There are 26 multiple choice question with 19 being the pass mark. You will be notified after the exam of your result.

The intermediate exam builds on your knowledge of the Foundation course. A practical assessment of skill such as soldering a small electronics – radio related – product. There are 45 multiple choice questions. You will be notified after the exam of your result.

The advanced exam is not a trivial exam. It takes all of your gained knowledge from the Foundation and Intermediate training. Because, when studying for your Advanced exam , there is no requirement to undertake any formal training, as the exam is wholly theory based. The training can be undertaken singularly or you could join a group at your local Radio Club. There is a group that do distance learning for the Advanced exam. There are 62 multiple choice questions. Unlike the Foundation and Intermediate exams you will not be notified of your result after the exam. All exam papers are sent away for marking.

You must take the exams in the order of Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced. You cannot go from the Foundation directly to the Advanced exam. Once you have passed the Foundation you can then proceed to the Intermediate and then the Advanced. Please see the relevant page on the RSGB web site for Exams details.
As you progress, with the examinations, so will your skill and knowledge about Amateur Radio and various other aspects associated with it.
We, as a club, are fortunate that we have a registered trainer who can offer their services. We also have a registered exam secretary who will officiate at the exams. There is no charge for training, but you have to pay the Radio Society of Great Britain for the examinations and your share of the hire of the registered centre to take your exam.
